The formation of domain patterns during a phase transition from a high symmetry phase to a low symmetry phase is a reﬂection of the system trying to recover those lost symmetries. The number of domain states or variants in the low temperature phase is equal to the ratio of the number of operations in the high and low symmetry groups. There are 230 space groups and 32 point groups describing the symmetry operations allowed in crystal structures .
