5. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION The starting point of this study was a multilevel design in which, in addition to individual characteristics, country characteristics were assumed to be related to life satisfaction at the individual level. Two theories that are not usually directly connected, since they are tested at one level only, were now combined in one multilevel theory WEALTH OF NATIONS, INDIVIDUAL INCOME AND LIFE SATISFACTION 31 and the implications were translated into five hypotheses. The last hypothesis concerned a cross-level interaction effect between the individual and the context level.

Individuals vary much more with regard to life satisfaction than do countries. 24 The intercept is the value of the response variable when all explanatory variables are zero. Since neither age nor age-squared have meaningful zeros (the minimum age is 18), centering the variables results in a meaningful intercept. That is, the intercept reflects the life satisfaction of an average aged, single, low income person. 25 In normal regression modeling, it is impossible for the multiple correlation R2 to get smaller after adding explanatory variables.

This is shown in the last column of Table III. 284, as compared to the relatively low effects of income, the control variables, and the interaction-effects. This means that the macro-level variable wealth of a nation is a stronger predictor of life satisfaction than the micro-level variables. 5. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION The starting point of this study was a multilevel design in which, in addition to individual characteristics, country characteristics were assumed to be related to life satisfaction at the individual level.
